Despite the "frivolous allegation" that they masterminded the kidnap of Pa Simeon Soludo, father of former Central Bank of Nigeria CBN governor, Charles Soludo, culminating in their invitation by the police, in Awka on Monday, The 23 governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State have insisted that only a candidate that emerged from a proper primary election will be acceptable to them as the party's flagbearer in the forthcoming governorship polls.
The candidates, who operate on the banner of Integrity Group, reiterated their resolve not to be cowed into accepting the "imposition of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and Senator Emma Anosike" as the PDP candidates in the coming governorship poll.
Meanwhile, Chief Chris Uba has gotten the leave of an Enugu High Court to enforce his fundamental rights in line with section 35 of the 1999 Constitution over the allegation that he was one of the masterminds of the kidnap of farther of Soludo.
Uba's had approached the court through his lawyer, Chuma Oguejiofor, complaining that his rights to personal liberty was in jeopardy of being infringed upon following his invitation by the Anambra State Police Command over the kidnap.
Oguejiofor had argued that since no prima-facie case had been established against his client by the police, they have no right to invite or detain him pending investigation, noting that the Supreme Court had laid down in Fawehinmi vs IGP that where you don't have a prima facie case against somebody, you need not arrest and detain the person before investigating.
In granting his application, the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezulike said that "the leave so granted be or act as a stay of all actions or matter connected with or related to the complaint of the applicant." He adjourned hearing on the matter till November 10.
The PDP aspirants who addressed newsmen in Enugu decried what they termed as "embarrassing and spurious allegations" that they were masterminds of Soludo father's kidnap, describing it as a dangerous dimension in the politics of the state. They said that the kidnap allegation was only but a distraction to the impending issue of Anambra PDP governorship primary election, adding that it had nothing to do with the rally held by the party in Awka.
Chief Chuma Nwofor and Princess Kate Egwu, who spoke on behalf of the aspirants, condemned the development, urging all the parties in the state to play the game according to the rules.
They explained that the rally held in Awka upon which the police hinged their alleged culpability in the kidnap was basically to chart a new course for the party which they noted has been in disarray since the "imposition of Soludo" on them.
Nwofor said: "We have said it over and over again that we must not accept the selection of Soludo because we must learn to be under a party that is law abiding. We have been talking about internal democracy and we want that to start with our party. Our party set out criteria on how whoever would be our candidate is expected to emerge but unfortunately that process was truncated by Soludo through different court orders which he secured through his proxies".
