PORT HARCOURT—The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has gone into partnership with the United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR) on the implementation of a set of programmes targetted at training and capacity building for good governance and sustainable development in the region.

Managing Director of the commission, Mr Chibuzor Ugwoha, who made this known yesterday at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, said the project would cost $3.28 million. According to him, NDDC is to contribute 70 percent, which is an equivalence of $2.296 million, while 30 percent would come from the UN agency.

Noting that the commission had met its part of the financial obligation, Ogwoha urged all partners for sustainable development to fully key into the project, saying that it would assist in the transformation of the region.

He said the programme would lay a solid foundation for good governance in the region, identified in the NDDC’s master plan as one of the tools needed for the rapid development of the region.

“The commission entered into agreement with the United nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR) on the implementation of a set of programmes targeted at training and capacity building for good governance and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.

“The goal of the partnership is to ensure the practice of good governance and sustainable development with focus on poverty reduction, enterprise development and demand-driven community-based activities in the region.

“The partnership is based on a counterpart funding of $3,280,000. NDDC is to contribute 70%, being the equivalent of $2,296,000, while UNITAR will contribute 30%, being equivalent of 984,000USD,” the NDDC boss said.
