Security agencies in Rivers state are yet to locate the whereabouts of Ifeanyi Ejuku, a final-year student of Madonna University, Okija, Anambra state, who was abducted in his family house, along Mgbuoba-NTA road, Port Harcourt, last Saturday.
According to family sources, at about 11.30 a.m., armed gunmen stormed the house of the Ejukus, held the family members hostage by locking them up in a room. They dragged Ifeanyi into an unnumbered ash-coloured Mercedes Benz 190 salon car and zoomed off. The spokesman of the Joint Task Force, Lt. Colonel Sagir Musa, while confirming the kidnap, said “those responsible for the dastardly act are yet to be ascertained, as no group has claimed responsibility and contact has not been made.”
He, however, added that the motive of the kidnap is pecuniary and that the JTF commander, Brig. General Anwal Mohammed, had, on receiving the report, alerted all security agencies in the state. Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has passed an Anti-Kidnapping Bill, which prescribes life imprisonment for kidnappers.
It was learnt that the state governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, had pushed for the death penalty, but the lawmakers thought otherwise. They had argued that kidnapping is different from murder and, as such, should not attract capital punishment. The governor is yet to sign the bill into law.
