Muhammed Audu is a musician with a passion to make a difference. His stage name is MD Righteous Dreadlocks. As a native of Kogi State, he was born in Jos, Plateau State but spent a greater part of his life in Ajegunle, Lagos.
While growing up in Ajegunle, Audu discovered his hidden talents in music. And having listened to the music of the late Reggae icon Bob Marley, he got inspired Thus, MD Dreadlocks decided to venture into Rasta music. He told Daily Sun recently that “ Like Bob Marley, I try as much as I can to play the music that will impact positively on the youths and every body in the society” adding that Bob Marley caught his fancy in so many ways, but more particularly, his Redemption Song, which he said was food for thought. “Bob Marley fought for freedom through his insightful music. People seem to have forgotten him but his memory will be forever green.” he said.
Audu started music during his early years, precisely after his secondary education. Since then, he has traversed the perimeter of the music profession, performing alongside renowned artistes like Marvellous Benji, Black Face and Black Skin. He has performed in several shows at Comfort Hotel, Kingstine Joe, among many others.
According to him, music is life. “ Music is more of life. It is therapeutic. Music is more spiritual than physical.” He lashed at the type of music being played in recent times, people’s perception of the profession and the bastardization that has crept into the industry. He also advised that “ Everybody must not be a musician. Many People see music as a do or die affair, something that should be done for the sake of it or pecuniary gains. This should not be. No wonder some Nigerian musicians are seen as unserious people. People see music as simply an act for entertainment, and not a serious affair. The fact is that although music is a form of entertainment, it is essentially an art that has its own style and manner of presentation.”
Asked about his inspiration, he said “ My inspiration comes from the Most High, I listen to people on the road. As well I listen to other peoples’ music. Real music does not come at once. Currently, MD Dreadlocks is working on a new album entitled I can’t give up the fight, which will hit the public with a bang. The album, according to him would encourage youths to fight on and not give up even when the road is rough and tough.
He said he is challenged by the rash discrimination by humans, meeting new possibilities and financial resources. “You see there are more challenges on the way. As a musician from the Ghetto, you are rejected and people weigh you with the negative scale. That is why I’m working on I can’t give up the fight. He advised the youths who are interested in music to believe in God and themselves and have meaningful role models. He said that youths should not be misguided by politicians who are determined to ruin their future. His words “Most great musicians come from the Ghetto where people say nothing good can come from. Don’t allow inferiority complex to ruin your career.”
About the Nigerian music industry and players, Dreadlocks said that artistes should face real music. He decried the situation where nudity is exposed in the name of musical shows. He expressed confidence that in the next three years to come, he would be at the top of his career.
